ESG & Sustainability in Bulgaria | 2023 edition | Revised

The second edition of the ESG study focused on the Bulgarian economy is out now!
In our first report, published in 2022, we analysed the risks and opportunities Bulgaria is facing on the road to greater sustainability based on the percentage of national gross added value (GVA) formed by activities considered eligible under the EU Taxonomy for sustainable activities. Now, we are expanding this analysis to include the latest updates in climate change mitigation and adaptation activities made by the European Commission. We also distinguish between enabling and transitional activities for a more precise estimation of the sustainability component of the Bulgarian economy.
Key findings from the report include:
-
A substantial portion of the activities in the real estate, utilities, and IT and telecommunications sectors are considered eligible under the criteria established by the Taxonomy.
-
The aforementioned sectors present significant investment potential that can yield immediate benefits for both the economy and climate change mitigation.
-
In terms of sustainability improvement potential, Bulgaria ranks third among Southeast European countries.
